California recognizes Diwali: School kids, families can now celebrate the Hindu festival of lights without missing a beat

California has officially recognized Diwali as a state holiday, with Governor Newsom signing AB 268 into law. Starting in 2026, schools and community colleges can close on Diwali, allowing Hindu, Jain, Buddhist, and Sikh communities, especially children, to fully observe the festival’s traditions without academic conflict.
