Telangana, Madhya Pradesh among states with most zero-enrolment schools, MoE issues advisory
Nearly 8,000 Indian schools had zero student enrolment in the 2024–25 session, employing over 20,000 teachers, reveals Ministry of Education (MoE) data. West Bengal recorded the highest number of such schools and teachers, followed by Telangana and Madhya Pradesh. Some states and Union Territories, including Delhi, reported no zero-enrolment schools. The MoE has advised states to merge or optimise schools for better infrastructure and staff utilisation, addressing the persistent issue of schools without students.
